VAL D'ISERE TRAVEL > BY CAR

car
Val d'Isere is approximately 600 miles from the channel ports and is served by motorway to within 12 miles of the resort. Tolls (Peage) cost approximately £48 each way. The Journey takes approximately 10 hours from Calais. If you are stopping overnight try and make Troyes otherwise it is a long journey on the second day.

The French motorways are less crowded than ours and plenty of services which are fine for fuel and loos but not great for eating so take your own.

It seems that no one is quite clear about car insurance but we have spent a long time researching it and here is the low down: UK car insurance covers you for third party only - even if you have fully comprehensive UK insurance. Insurance companies will advise you that you need a green card but a green card is only proof that you have third paarty insurance and is not insurance itself - it is not necessary for France and the EU. What you need is a certificate of international motor insurance which gives you fully comprehensive insurance abroad and this will cost you around £18 for a two weeks but varies with each insurer. If you currently have only third party UK insurance you will have to check to see if your insurance company will insure you for fully comprehensive cover whilst abroad. I hope this helps - you probably know more than the insurance company now!

The quickest way to cross the channel is of course the eurotunnel which takes half an hour plus another half for checking in. Prices from £200.

If money is not an issue then go for the flexi ticket which is about £50 more expensive but allows you to get on any train rather than the one you have booked. Kids like it because you get free snack bag, just visit the departure lounge allocated only for flexi ticket holders.
