VAL D'ISERE TRAVEL > CAR RENTAL

a car
Car rental can be a complicated business and there is so much choice. Here are just a few car rental companies.

www.avis.com
www.ba.com
www.budget.com
EasyCar Special Offers
www.europecar.com
www.hertz.com
www.holidayauto.com
www.sixt.com

It is just a matter of looking for the cheapest deal as in our experience there is very little difference in terms of service. However comparing prices is not always easy, we have found that Holiday Autos and surprisingly BA can often be cheaper than other rental companies.

Unplugged Tip 1:
If you cannot decide between flying to Lyon or Geneva this may influence your choiceÖ.

At Lyon the car hire is a bus ride away. This means a long hike through the airport following the signs for (location de vehicle) then down the lift to catch the bus to the car rentals. If you have lots of luggage, skis and children this is no fun and can take half an hour.

At Geneva airport the car rental is just across the car park road down in the lift and youíre there - quick and easy and warm.

Unplugged Tip 2:
If you are renting a car from Geneva you can choose either the French side or the Swiss side.

In Switzerland all cars must pay for a vignette (a road tax) and hence the rental can be at least £50 more expensive that renting from the French side. However if you rent from the French side you cannot use the network of motorways around Geneva airport and have to drive a circuitous route to get to into France beyond the Swiss border.

We always go via the Swiss side otherwise we get lost.

Unplugged Tip 3:
Always hire snow chains. If the weather turns bad the police can stop you and insist on snow chains. In addition in the winter months it is dangerous to drive without them.

Unplugged Tip 4:
If you want to put skis on the roof hire the magnetic ski racks. But these are not lockable just fasten with rubber clips.

Unplugged Tip 5:
You pay for collision damage waiver which means you pay the first say £500 of any damage which varies by operator but now you can buy collision damage waiver excess which reduces the excess to nil. It is really a lottery whether to take it or not but it does offer peace of mind.

Unplugged Tip 6:
If you are on a busy flight you can expect to wait up to an hour to get your car.

Unplugged Tip 7:
If you book via the internet you are usually sent a rental voucher to hand in at the rental desk. DO NOT forget it.

Unplugged Tip 8:
Finally donít forget your driving licence or any additional drivers licence, both bits not just the laminated bit.
