SKIING > SAFETY / AVALANCHE

Please do consider the issues of safety when skiing. The International Ski Federation publish the following rules of conduct designed to reduce incidents on the slopes.

Respect – do not endanger or prejudice others

Control – Ski in control, adapting speed and manner to ability, the conditions and the traffic.

Choice of routes – the uphill skier must choose his route so he does not endanger skiers ahead.

Overtaking – allowed above or below right or left, but leave enough room for the overtaken skier.

Entering or starting a run – look up and down the piste when doing so.

Stopping – avoid stopping in narrow places or where visibility is restricted.

Climbing – keep to the side of the piste when climbing up or down.

Signs and markings – respect these.

Assistance – every skier must assist at accidents.

Identification – all involved in an accident (including witnesses) must exchange details.

Unplugged would like to add a few additional tips;

Never go off piste skiing alone.

Never use a piste if it is designated as closed.

Look up the mountain before setting off.

Be aware of your speed, hitting a fellow skier at speed can cause serious injury.

Always take heed of avalanche notices.

AVALANCHES

The risk of avalances is very real and attention should be paid to the information displayed at all lift stations. The risk is graded 1 to 5. Yellow – risk 1&2 is low

Risk. Yellow/Black checks – 3&4 Is moderate risk, take caution when skiing off piste. Black – risk 5, high risk, off piste skiing strongly discouraged.
